JOB DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF NURSING

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary focus of the Director of Nursing is the responsibility and accountability of the quality, service, and safety of resident care, and management of the nursing department. The Director of Nursing must be proactive in the development, organization and implementation of facility practices to ensure regulatory compliance and changes in clinical practices/guidelines.

ACCOUNTABLE TO:

This position reports directly to the Administrator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

This position requires a degree from an accredited School of Nursing and current licensure in the State of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse.

This position requires one to two years of previous supervisory experience. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skills in their application are essential. A thorough understanding of modern principles and practices of nursing home administration is also a necessity. Sound judgment, high moral standards, and a sincere desire to work with the aged and those with limited capacity for self care, are also vital to the success of this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENTAL

Position works in a clean, well-lit environment. This position may be required to interact with hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, employees, and visitors.

 

HAZARDOUS EXPOSURE RISK

Potential risks with this position include, but are not limited to muscle strain, back/shoulder injuries, stress illnesses, inflicted wounds, needle sticks, falls, allergic reactions, bruises/injuries from disruptive patient behavior.

 

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE TO BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGEN RISKS

This position is classified as a Category I exposure. (See Infection Control for description). In this job classification there is potential risk for occupational exposure with infective diseases, including AIDS and Hepatitis.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the employee to be physically and mentally capable of performing job duties and responsibilities, including the ability to endure prolonged sitting, standing, bending stooping, climbing and walking. Employees must be capable of frequently carrying objects weighting up to 10 pounds, lifting up to 20 pounds, and occasionally lifting 20 to 35 pounds and frequently pushing and pulling of up to 50 pounds.

 

It is an expectation that employees evaluate each situation and consider his or her, own ability relevant to that situation and seek assistance if necessary.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIES:

1.     Manages own time to accomplish responsibilities.

2.     Uses critical thinking and problem solving techniques when managing responsibilities.

3.     Presents as a role model. Adheres to dress code and maintains a professional appearance.

4.     Displays a positive attitude and is supportive of peers and administration.

5.     Assigns, directs, reviews and supervises the work of the case managers and other nursing department staff members; accurately completes job performance appraisals for nursing management.

6.     Develops and provides revisions to job descriptions for the nursing department.

7.     Develops, revises, monitors, and implements the nursing department budget to ensure appropriate utilization of resources, subject to administrative review.

8.     Responsible for staffing levels to ensure patient/residents’ needs are met.

9.     Reviews, directs, and assists in control of staffing and material/product costs, in order to maintain budgetary guidelines.

10.  Ensures employee evaluations have been completed, and are done in a timely manner.

11.  Recommends the hiring, discharge, suspension, assignment, discipline, etc. of the employees in the nursing department.

12.  Assists in the management of human resources and worker’s compensation issues for the nursing department.

13.  Directs the hiring process for nursing management personnel; conducts interviews for nursing management personnel.

14.  Responsible for investigation and reporting of employee licensing issues to the Wisconsin Board of Nursing.

15.  Serves as facility liaison and educator between the facility and the community.

16.  Ensures communication for all levels of nursing.

17.  Treats employees, patients/residents, and their families with mutual respect and dignity.

18.  Uses and promotes positive working relationship with nursing and other departments.

19.  Uses and promotes effective communication techniques with staff, residents, families, visitors and other health care professionals.

20.  Promotes a positive image of the facility.

Resident Care Delivery

1.     Maintains open communication with the facility Medical Director.

2.     Develops resident incident follow-up process, revises as necessary; ensures implementation of process.

 

3.     Reviews all resident incidents/accidents.

4.     Reviews all medication errors.

5.     Ensures patient/resident confidentiality, protects and respects patient/resident rights.

6.     Participates in reporting/investigation of the vulnerable adult program and reporting process.

7.     Consults with other departments in the admission process of residents, as required.

8.     Develops and maintains policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all State and Federal long-term care regulations and nursing standards.

9.     Ensures that quality improvement programs are implemented for accurate completion of resident assessments, care plans and delivery of care as defined by State and Federal regulations and nursing practices. Communicates concerns and participates in facility quality improvement team meetings.

Safety

1.     Assures facility emergency plans are followed during drills and in the event of an emergency. Intervenes and counsels staff as necessary.

2.     Assures safety practices are consistently followed in accordance with OSHA rules and facility policy.

3.     Responds to emergency situations as appropriate.

4.     Supervises ongoing development and implementation of a comprehensive infection control program for residents and employees which meets State and Federal regulations.

5.     Reports equipment repair, maintenance, needs or safety hazards.

Education

1.     Ensures that an educational/training process for nursing staff is in place to meet regulatory requirements and staff needs.

2.     Ensures there is an educational program in place for residents, family and the community as needed.

3.     Supports and assists the staff development department with facility in-service education.

4.     Participates in internal (in-service) and external (i.e., workshops, courses) educational opportunities to maintain professional competency.

5.     Participates in professional organizations.
